buildings of the republic, part 1

the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories, pictured here, was built by good ol' Frank Gehry in 1992. now i'm normally no fan of Gehry's style, so-called Deconstructionist architecture, but i must admit that i have grown accustomed to seeing this structure perched, as it is, on the east bank of the Iowa River. i find it to be a nice contrast to the numerous drab, Brutalist-style buildings that dominate this area of town (i'll get to those in due time). i snapped this on one of my many wild and zany rides along the local MUP.

AC makes time travel possible/1.21 Gigawatts

"Don't worry. As long as you hit that wire with the connecting hook at precisely 88 miles an hour, the instant the lightning strikes the tower... everything will be fine!"

it is done

When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
“It is done.”
People did not like it here.

dusk till dawn

i snapped this the other night as i was out for a stroll around the neighborhood. the observant iowa citians among you will notice Seashore Hall in the lower right of the picture.

this morning, looking east from our backyard.

"What were the skies like when u were young?
They went on for ever and they when I we lived in Arizona and the skies
always had little fluffy clouds and err.. they were long and clear and there
were lots of stars, at night.
And errr when it rain it would all turn, it, they were beautiful, the most
beautiful skies as a matter of fact, the sunsets were purple and red and
yellow and on fire and the clouds would catch the colours everywhere,
thats, its neat because I used to look at them all the time when i was
little. You don't see that."
